Understanding Birthstones: A Complete Guide – All About You Series

Birthstones have been used since time immemorial to denote birth months. If you google them you may find a few different stones for the same month – we’re going with the standardized jewelers list and our jewelry supplier on this one.

Birthstones were standardized in the early 20th century by the (American) National Association of Jewelers (now called Jewelers of America). The list was updated in 1952 by adding alexandrite for June, citrine for November and pink tourmaline for October. They also replaced December’s lapis with zircon and swapped the primary/alternate gems for March. Although there have been a few additions since 2002, we are happy to stick with traditional (well known) birthstones, as shown in the image.

Not sure what gemstone matches your birth month? No problem. The typed list below includes all US birthstones while the image from Invictus lists their CZ equivalents. If you are interested in a stone we don’t currently have in stock, we are happy to special order it for you. We often have high demand for opals, not so much for genuine diamond.

Tattoos are such a personal thing, we think your piercings should be as well! Wearing your birthstone is a great way to personalize any piercing.

Are crystals and rocks just your thing and you know what energy you’re trying to attract and send out into the world? Example: Amethyst is often seen as a stone for peace, some believe its calming presence helps produce soothing dreams. Clearly amethyst isn’t just for February birthdays.

Does Eastern Philosophy help keep you centered or do you need your chakras aligned? We would love to plan out a project ear with you using all the right gems for all the right needs.

More of a Tree of Life person? We can help match those gems too.

Gemstones can represent so many different things, we’re not trying to box them into one use during one month. We are trying to put some good out into the world, Celebrate You – whether that is a tried & true birthstone or a more mystical, spiritual, might we even say existential, use of these beautiful threadless tops.
